Richard: Archetypes: Week 2

Archetype: The Initiation:

A scene where Michael and the rest of the Corleone family were planning to kill Sollozzo for Vito Corleone's safety. Michael planned out the entire plan for the assassination. This is the initiation for Michael to become mature and be able to take care of the whole Corleone family business if Vito Corleone died.

The Journey:

After the assassination, Michael went on a journey to Sicily for about a year. He married Apollonia in the process and witnessed the death of Apollonia. During his trip in Sicily, he spoke fluent Italian compared to when he spoke to Sollozzo. When he came back to NY, he seemed to have much more understanding of family business.

Literary Feature: Symbol

In the Godfather, an interesting symbol would be the fruit Orange and the color orange. For example, Vito Corleone was shot when he was buying oranges. He almost died. Another time that showed the color orange around Vito Corleone was when he was feeding the goldfish, which were orange. The last time that showed Orange around Vito was when he was playing with his grandson, and he died from a stroke. The color and fruit both symbolizes death towards Vito Corleone. The fish, as mentioned before, a sicillian message of death.

Mario Puzo seemed to view the color orange as death...

Richard: Class Act: week 1

An interesting discussion would be Kay and her clothes. At the beginning, Kay was always wearing Red, or to be more precise, Scarlet. Scarlet the color is flame. Also meant blood of a living person. Scarlet is a mixture of red and slight orange. Mr. McGuigan said that she was wearing red because she was an outsider of the Corleone family. I looked up at Chakra, which is part of Hinduism. There are 2 Chakra that symbolize with color, one is Svadisthana, which is the Sacral Chakra, and Muladhara, the Base Chakra. The Sacral Chakra did not mention much about outsider or security, but the Base Chakra mentioned something about security on what Muladhara governs. In spirituality, it governs a sense of security.

It might implied that Mario Puzo had looked into Chakra when writing The Godfather

Richard: Godfather: Archetypes Week 1

An interesting archetype that can be found in the story is the mentor. An interesting mentor found in Godfather is Clemenza. One scene it showed Clemenza cooking for approximately 6 people in his house. Michael was there, and Clemenza told him to come here and learn. He showed him his recipe for cooking "sausage and meatballs" just in case for "cooking for 20 people".
Another side of being Michael's mentor is when preparing for Sollozzo and McClusky's assassination. Clemenza planned out where to plant the gun, prepared the special designed gun that leaves no trace, and told him the instruction of what to do before and after the assassination. The assassination was a success. Clemenza also mentioned" We were all proud of you. Being a Hero and all."

Literary Feature: Foreshadowing

When i first watched The Godfather, a scene where Luca Brasi was killed by The Tatallias reflected on foreshadowing. Foreshadowing often works with literature or works when viewed more than once. When i watched the godfather the second time at school, i noticed the glass window where there are designs of fishes, it had foreshadowed Luca's death. Also, after Luca's death, Sonny, Tom, Mike, and Clemenza were having a meeting. Paulie got a package from the postman. The package contained a fish with Luca's bullet vest. Clemenza explained that it is a sicillian message, "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes."

Seemingly fishes is a sign of death...
